Deep Focus Natural Resources Defense Council
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) works to protect wildlife and wild places and to ensure a healthy environment for all life on earth. It partnered with Advomatic to launch several advocacy microsites targeting issues such as green energy, green economy and youth activism using social media tools.
Challenges & Needs
With It's Your Nature, NRDC's high-level goal was to redesign and port to Drupal a site targeted at a young generation of internet-savvy users, encouraging their participation in green activism through the use of online media technologies.
The redesigned site will inspire and involve this demographic by giving them the ability to take immediate action towards fulfilling their own commitment to make real change.
Requirements included:
- A Flash banner with administration in Drupal for featuring initiatives, quotes, and rich media content
- Featured and embedded audio and video from third-party sites like YouTube
- Donations and Send to Friend functionality
- Syndicated content from NRDC's feeds
- Multi-site search results
Results
These days, thanks to Drupal developers such as Advomatic's Aaron Winborn, embedded media and social networking tools are commonly installed Drupal modules. But back in 2007, NRDC's goals were at the front end of this emerging trend and many of these modules were still in early development.
Advomatic performed the following to meet these goals:
- Installed and configured various multimedia modules and customizations to allow for embedded media from third-party sites
- Implemented a rotating front page Flash banner, using XML files and a custom admin tool for content upload by editors via Drupal
- Converted designs to an original Drupal theme
- Provided ongoing technical consulting on managing mult-site installs on their hosted infrastructure
