We're progressive movementarians. Advomatic is committed to building the online infrastructure for America's Progressive Movement. Much of our pro-bono work and discounted 'really cool cause' development work is for organizations that themselves aim to provide connective tissue for the Progressive Movement, organizations like Living Liberally.
Our newest mission project is BuyBlue.org.
For over two years BuyBlue.org inspired people to take action and vote with their wallets. With methodical data analysis tracking FEC reports, as well as information about corporate conduct such as labor rights, environmental practices, corporate and social responsibility, industry practices and community involvement, BuyBlue sought to educate consumers about whether the places they shop are in line with their values.
We invite your feedback on the future of BuyBlue.org, especially your brainstorms on the next incarnation of this great progressive infrastructure resource. If you care enough to help make this work, Advomatic would appreciate your ideas - please join us in the comments.

the best thing you could do to truly maximize the potential of buyblue and to ensure it's legacy would be to FREE the data.
then other groups could riff on it. there's so much that could be done, and locking it behind a single non-profit is very limiting.

Those of us who believe in supporting those companies & organizations that support the US Constitution, the working American, and civil and human rights have been devastated by the demise of BuyBlue. I would appreciate an update from whomever has the database and the abilities to keep us advised of corporate donations. We are all aware of WalMart & Home Depot...but, it is important that we do what we can. All we have is our pocketbook...but we are MANY!!! Don't let BuyBlue be a futile effort. Let us keep what they started going on for future electors. We must continue.

Fri, 2007-07-06 08:53
Hi, I'm very interested in starting up BuyBlue 2.0.
I'm a pretty experienced web and database developer (over a decade) and work in the technology sector.
I've developed business and activism web sites for several clients and for myself, and understand the issues (marketing, SEO, design, coding, cost, etc...) involved in running a website (one current one is TexasKaos.com).
If you guys are willing, I'd like to know more about what would be involved to take on the project. You would also probably want to make sure I was right for the job & stayed true to the vision of BuyBlue.
I hope that wasn't too presumptuous & I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
Please let me know.
Thanks,
kp

Meanwhile, for people in Orange County California,
There is this effort to compile a list of local alternatives to mega corporations:

If you live in or do business in OC, I hope you can make use of it/share it/contribute to it.

i find myself wondering if we could somehow do something to bring buyblue back to life? because everytime i buy something i'm always thinking, "Hmm i wonder what party my money is going to when i purchase things here." seriously, the format of the site was super user friendly and broken down really simply/sufficiently. bring buyblue back please!

to read all these comments!
I was involved with BuyBlue extensively, as an original board member and web developer. I do hope Advomatic can bring the site back to life in some form... it was something I was very passionate about. I did have some issues with our methodology as it was, and think that it definitely should be tweaked in any future incarnations (for example, the "$500 donation to a Republican candidate can get a company branded as Red" problem).
The power to harness the opinions and reporting from ordinary citizens in order to rate companies has only gained steam since we launched the site, with this whole Web 2.0 stuff exploding in the past few years.

Sat, 2007-06-16 00:51
I am distressed to find the Buy Blue website defunct. It is so easy to feel politically helpless and insignificant, but Buy Blue gave me the information to support those companies who care about the same things as I do. I made numerous changes in my buying habits and feel more politically empowered. The broader focus on corporate behaviors in addition to political contributions is helpful. I hope I will continue to be able to use Buy Blue or it's reincarnation as a resource for buying decisions now and always.
Sincerely,
Todd Winnick

I was very sad to hear that Buy Blue, for whatever reason, had to shut its virtual doors. I found it to be such a wonderful, informative, and important site, providing a badly needed service. It was unique and an excellent way in which to keep tabs on what large corporations were doing with their PAC money, where they ranked on human rights, workers rights, and the environment... just to name a few.
I hope that this here blog helps to keep the Buy Blue torch burning. We need it, now more than ever.
Thank you, Buy Blue, for all you have done.

Sat, 2007-06-16 19:19
I left due to the mounting pressure of juggling my paying day job with the responsibilities of being a board director of a nonprofit, as well as not being able to foot the bill myself on some of the costs of running a tight ship (legal fees, declining donations, etc...). This was a few months before the organization officially folded.
Did we bite off more than we could chew, officially forming a nonprofit and such? I think that played a part, all of us had full time gigs and never received a dime for the hours and hours we put into things.
A self sustaining financial model would be imperative for future BuyBlue projects, as you can only ask the same core group of people on your mailing list for money so many times.

Tue, 2007-06-19 15:23
I did not use BuyBlue often after I first found it and read what felt like the whole site, but whenever I needed to research a new place to buy or do x, y, z I'd be back. (which is why I'm here today, b/c I need a credit card company and bank that aren't horribly evil!) But I found it utterly invaluable, and I absolutely shaped my buying to your findings. I consider its service every bit as useful as something like my subscription to Consumer Reports. I would be happy to pay ~$20/year just to have it available when I need it, as I do with CR. Maybe you could set up something like CR does, with some articles free and others subscription only, and if you got enough money you could open more and more up free?
Is there anything other than money you need? I don't quite know what sort of ideas you're looking for, but I'm definitely bereft at its loss and would like to help get it back online. I know, sort of, how to go about looking up a company's donations, but I don't know how, without effort I can't put into it, to figure out their ethics.

»ideas...
Fri, 2007-06-29 12:23
I've always maintained that the site should be a wealth of knowledge for ANYONE interested in using it to influence their purchasing power, not just Democrats/progressives/liberals. "Blue companies" and "red companies" both can do some awful stuff, unrelated to their political contributions. Just the fact that there is a site/organization collecting all of this information and organizing consumers should be a factor for companies to "do good"... not even because they want to, but because they are slowly being forced to as their corporate actions affect the bottom line.
Ideas for sustainability:
- Not taking responsibility over FEC filing data for political contributions and the time it takes to fact check and research all of that stuff. I would keep that highly boring volunteer work off the table, it's tough to get people to want to pour over all those numbers and spreadsheets on a consistent basis. Perhaps the $ amounts could be syndicated from another site or organization that has the resources/team to come up with those $ amounts (opensecrets.org?).
- Reward system for quality blogging, commenting, profile research.
- Less importance of political donations on overall rankings of companies. I think it should just be information that can be reported as a separate number, next to an overall BuyBlue rating (which can be easier generated using scores/ratings on core progressive values).
- User-selectable methodology: User could rank the issues that are most important to him/her and subsequently any "overall" ratings for companies would reflect this information. Example: Bob hates when companies have a terrible environmental record, and he ranks that as his #1 issue. Now when browsing ratings of companies, a company will now have a higher "overall MyBuyBlue" rating when that company has a great record on the environment.
- Income that is predictable. Hardware costs, etc... adds up. It was always a question of whether running ads on the site would be a conflict of interest. But what if we only ran ads that had at least a, for example, 90/100 BuyBlue rating?

It was a great tool for me to ensure that I did mistakenly help fund any Socialist leaning enterprises that only serve the interests of liberal elites in their quest to damage the conservative values that have made America great. At least I can take solace in the fact that since the site has now "moved on" and went the way of Air America; there just must not be enough widespread interest in continuing such a misguided movement.
